Admission Requirements

To begin Commercial Pilot Licence training, students must meet Transport Canada’s eligibility standards:

Prerequisites
  • Have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Private Pilot Licence (PPL) – Aeroplane
  • Valid Category 1 Medical Certificate
  • Minimum 18 years of age at the time of licence issuance
  • Proof of English proficiency (ICAO-compliant)
  • Minimum 200 hours total flight time, including:
    • 100 hours Pilot in Command (PIC)
    • 20 hours cross country PIC
  • 65 hours of CPL flight training, including:
    • 35 hours dual (advanced maneuvers, instrument, night, cross country)
    • 30 hours solo (including 25 hours solo practice and a 300 NM cross country)
  • Minimum 80 hours of Transport Canada approved CPL ground school
  • Subjects include:
    • Advanced meteorology
    • Air law & commercial regulations
    • Navigation & flight planning
    • Human factors
    • Aircraft systems & performance
    • Professional decision making
  • Transport Canada Written Exam (CPAER)
  • Transport Canada Flight Test – CPL(A)

Privileges of the Commercial Pilot Licence

Upon successful completion, the CPL(A) grants the following privileges:

  • Act as PilotinCommand or CoPilot of an aircraft for hire or reward
  • Conduct commercial air service operations (Part VII) when employed by an approved operator
  • Perform aerial work, including:
    • Sightseeing flights
    • Photography
    • Survey operations
    • Banner towing
  • Fly singleengine and multiengine aircraft (with appropriate ratings)
  • Pursue additional professional ratings such as:
    • MultiEngine Rating
    • Group 1 or Group 3 Instrument Rating (IFR)
    • Instructor Rating
  • Begin career pathways toward airline employment and ATPL licensing
